Understand when to use a, an or the?
It is so common that people get a, an, & the confused. We will clear that problem up right now, so you will understand when to use a, an & the.
A - An is an undefined article.
An undefined article refers to something not specific, anyone or any object .
A & An can be only used only with a singular noun.
Examples:
I want a pen. - any pen
I am going to rent a car. - any car
The is a defined article.
A defined article refers to something specific, a specific person or object. a certain person or object.
The can be used with singular, plural, uncountable noun & collective nouns.
The is also used when something is only one of a kinds, such as the sun, the sky, the world etc.
Examples:
I want the green pen. - specific pen - green pen.
I am going to rent the small car. - certain car - small car
A or An? - You use an after a word that starts with a vowel - vowels a,e,i,o.u and sometimes y.
Examples:
I want an apple.
I need a car.
**Please note: in cases where the first letter of a world is silent, and the second letter is a vowel, then in some cases you use an.
Example: hour. I will be there in an hour. The h in the word hour is silent, and the second letter is o, so you say an hour.
